‘Lost At Sea’ August 2012
A huge thanks to all the Lostlings who made it home safe and sound from ‘Lost At Sea’. This was without doubt our most sea-worthy production to date and a pretty spectacular adventure: amazing speakers, inspiring talks, an entire audience on inflatable rings…all beautifully punctuated with a familiar ‘POP’ of a bursting seat!
Below is a short blog entry and some lovely pictures to help bring it all to life.
People arriving as the sun begins to set over the city…

A deserted lighthouse, deep in the docks of London played host to The Lost Lectures 7&8. A wonderful space for our aquatic adventure.

The seating. 500 rubber rings required just a bit of lung power: left everyone at Lost HQ just a little lightheaded!

People taking their places.

A quick intro from Julian K-S on just some of the amazing results you get when you mix people and water.

Alastair Humphreys, explorer shares his incredible adventures. Inspiring stuff from the guy who’s cycled round the world, canoed across the Atlantic…oh and walked the entire length of the M25!

It’s The Amazings! (and Gandhi) Rich and Jen talk about how it’s not just sharing, liking, retweeting…it’s about taking the time and doing.

Dr Helen Scales our resident marine biologist talks about why other sea creatures should feel the love as much as Whales do. Her seahorse video got the biggest aaaah of the evening!

A bit of half time fun…Twitter challenge and giving away some pretty amazing prizes. Big thanks to Billingsgate Fish Market for their market experience, Appleton Estate for their exceptional spirit and 2 tasty bottles of their VX Rum, Liz from Oh Comely for a years subscription to their lovely magazine and finally a huge thank you to the wonderful Dennis Morris for his limited edition signed book ‘Growing Up Black’.

Half time at The Barnacle Bar. Huge shout out to Darling and Edge for their wonderful design and art direction.

Dr Fiona Haughey shares the treasures of the river beds. Pottery, Roman Artifacts and a Nokia 6310.

Dennis Morris, shares his amazing story from ‘Growing Up Black’ in Hackney to his incredible journey as Bob Marley’s friend and photographer.

The Retronaut, Chris Wild. Remixing time and re-examined the meaning of ‘now’. Can’t wait for this one to come out!

Finishing things up, the awesome Robin and Partridge talking about stories, kids and creativity. The message: Listen to Kids more! (includes several acts of randomness and audience participation!)

Night 2. Surviving rings are reassembled.

Mel Young, founder of the Homeless World Cup takes to the stage to share his mission of ending Homelessness. Big ambition, amazing guy!

The fabulous founder of Oh Comley Magazine Liz Ann Bennett shares her thoughts on the changing face of lifestyle media. Championing the stuff that makes us smile.

…and now for the science bit! The mystery CERN Scientist is finally revealed. Dr Veronique Boisvert gives an amazing talk on the discoveries going on at the LHC: an amazing spokesperson for ATLAS and CERN!

Prof. Jacquie McGlade, Executive Director of European Environmental Agency on the fourth pillar of democracy: Information. And working with people to drive better solutions for energy and resources.

The Enigmatic ‘Sixth Form Poet’ in search of the perfect joke. Does he find it? …Ha! He comes pretty f****in close!

And finally! The Great Puppet Horn, Jeremy Bidgood and Lewis Young perform some of their satirical puppetry and talk about the history of puppetry and why it’s such a simple yet powerful medium.

An amazing finish to a couple of incredible evenings with a backdrop that makes you proud to be a Londoner. A huge thanks goes to the whole team at Lost HQ, all our fabulous speakers and of course to all you lovely folk for making Lost At Sea so flippin’ fantastic!

Keep a lookout for all the talks as they come out and as ever…
Keep it to a whisper…
